Pastor’s Perspective: “Sleeping in at Shiloh”
Dear Calvary Family,
By the time we reach chapter 18 in Joshua, the land of Israel had been subdued in the sense that the coalition of kings and cities was no longer attempting to overthrow Israel as a whole. However, much of the land had not yet been occupied, and its inhabitants had not been driven out as God had instructed.
A significant transition had also occurred: the home base shifted from Gilgal (where they crossed the Jordan) to Shiloh, within the territory of Ephraim. Shiloh was a beautiful, large bowl-shaped valley surrounded by mountains. It became the home of the Ark of the Covenant for about 400 years, until the reign of David. Can you imagine the tabernacle at the center of the valley, with tents spread across the hills, sheltering millions of Israelites enjoying a measure of peace—all while looking down upon the dwelling place of God?
Of the 12 tribes instructed to conquer and possess the land allotted to them, only 5 took possession. Sometimes, the easiest and most comfortable thing to do is not the right thing to do—even peacefully camping in Shiloh! In verse 3, Joshua finally says, “How long will you put off entering to take possession of the land?”
Today, even in rural America, we’re seeing an all-time high of single adults over 30 still living at home and riding along for free at mom and dad’s place. We also have a record number of casual Christians sleeping in the pew. It’s time to leave Shiloh and begin your personal journey of faith. It’s time to forge your path, conquer your battles, and minister in a meaningful way in the greatest kingdom ever—the Kingdom of God!
Are you sleeping in at Shiloh?
Reminders:
This Sunday is a special Family Day as the children join us in the sanctuary for the service. The children plan to sing a song (bring your child!), and I’ll be sharing a children’s story explaining the elements of communion. After the teaching, all believers will partake in communion together.
Please note: We will NOT be having a fellowship meal this month.
Also, the April 18th Seder Meal is just two weeks away! You need to sign up on the app to attend. We are also in need of more servers—this is a wonderful opportunity for you to make a big difference! Sign up in the app under “Serve Meal During Event.”
See you on Sunday,
Pastor Marv
